How much does lawn mowing cost in Auckland?
Lawn mowing in Auckland costs $25 to $50 for a small lawn, $40 to $70 for a medium lawn, and $60 to $100+ for a large lawn. Hourly rates run $30 to $50.
Price is set primarily by lawn size, then by grass height and condition, terrain difficulty, whether green waste removal is included, and how often the service is booked. One-off jobs cost more per visit than a scheduled round, and overgrown lawns attract a surcharge.
See the full Auckland lawn mowing price guide for a detailed breakdown.
Do your prices include GST?
Yes. Every Auckland Lawns price is quoted GST-inclusive. The number in your quote is the number on your invoice.
Worth knowing: not every Auckland lawn mowing operator is GST-registered, and some quote ex-GST, meaning 15% goes on top. On a $50 quote that is an extra $7.50. Always ask before you accept a price.
Is regular mowing cheaper than booking one-off jobs?
Yes. A regular round costs less per visit than a one-off booking. Grass kept at a consistent height takes less time to cut, so each visit is quicker.
One-off jobs on lawns that have grown out take considerably longer and are priced to match. If your lawn has got away, the cheapest path is a one-off cleanup followed by a fortnightly round.
How much extra does an overgrown lawn cost to mow?
An overgrown Auckland lawn typically attracts a surcharge of $20 to $50 above the standard rate, and more on severely neglected sections.
The reason is mechanical, not commercial. Very long grass cannot be cut to normal height in one pass without damaging the root system, so it needs multiple gradual cuts — sometimes across two visits.
Once the lawn is back to a maintainable height, a regular fortnightly schedule stops the surcharge recurring.
Do you charge extra for green waste removal?
It depends on your arrangement. Some customers prefer clippings mulched back into the lawn, which returns nutrients to the soil and is often better for lawn health. Others want full removal for a cleaner finish.
Whichever you choose, your quote states exactly what is included, so nothing appears on the invoice that was not agreed.
Do you charge a travel fee for outer Auckland suburbs?
No travel fee applies to any suburb in our core Auckland service area — that covers all major residential areas across the North Shore, Central, East, West and South Auckland.
For outer locations such as Kumeū, Beachlands, Pukekohe and Helensville, a small travel fee may apply depending on distance. It is always confirmed in your quote before anything is booked.
Can I pay by bank transfer or invoice?
Yes. Bank transfer is available to all customers, and payment on the day of service is also accepted. Regular customers and commercial clients can be invoiced on agreed terms.
Landlords and property managers with several properties can be set up with consolidated monthly invoicing across the whole portfolio.
Do prices change between summer and winter?
No. The per-visit rate stays the same all year. What changes is how often the lawn needs cutting, which changes your annual spend.
Through summer most Auckland lawns need weekly or fortnightly visits. Through winter, monthly or less is usually enough. On a scheduled plan we adjust the frequency with the seasons so you only pay for visits the lawn actually needs.
Scheduling & visits
How often should I mow my lawn in Auckland?
Most Auckland lawns need mowing every 1 to 2 weeks from October to March, and monthly or less from June to August.
Auckland's mild, humid climate grows grass faster than most of New Zealand. After spring rain a lawn can go from neat to overgrown inside a week. Fortnightly is the schedule most Auckland homeowners settle on — it keeps grass manageable without the cost of weekly visits.
Do you offer weekly, fortnightly and monthly mowing?
Yes — weekly, fortnightly, monthly or seasonal. On an ongoing plan we can also shift the frequency automatically with the seasons, tightening up through summer and easing off in winter.
There is no contract. You can pause, change or stop at any time.
What time do you mow — will it disturb my neighbours?
We mow between 7:30am and 6:00pm, Monday to Saturday, which sits inside Auckland Council's noise guidelines of 7am to 10pm.
If you have neighbours who work nights or a baby sleeping, tell us and we will aim for a quieter slot where the route allows.
Do you mow in wet weather or rain?
Light rain does not usually stop a mow. Heavy rain or saturated ground does — wet clippings clump, edging turns messy, and sloped sections become genuinely unsafe.
If we need to move your visit, we contact you and reschedule, usually within the same week. You are never charged for a visit that did not happen.
Do I need to be home when you mow?
No. As long as we can get access, you do not need to be home. Most of our regular customers are at work when we visit.
Set your access instructions up once — gate, code, dog, where the bin lives — and you do not need to coordinate visits again. We can send a completion notification if you want confirmation while you are out.
How do I reschedule or pause my lawn mowing?
Phone, text or email — whichever is easiest. Going on holiday or want to skip a visit? Let us know as early as you can so we can plan the route.
There are no rigid contracts and no penalty for changing your mind.
What's included
What's included in a standard lawn mowing service?
A standard visit includes mowing to the right height for the season, basic edging along paths and driveways, and clippings blown off hard surfaces.
Quoted separately: green waste removal · detailed weedeating · hedge trimming · garden beds · overgrown surcharge
Your quote always states exactly what is covered before work begins.
Do you remove grass clippings after mowing?
Two options. Mulching cuts clippings finely and returns them to the lawn, which feeds the soil. Full removal takes them off the property for a cleaner look.
Tell us which you want when you book and we will confirm whether removal sits inside your quoted price or as an add-on.
Do you do edging as part of lawn mowing?
Basic edging along paths, driveways and hard surfaces is included in a standard mow. Detailed weedeating along garden beds, retaining walls and fence lines may be included or added — your quote will say which.
Do you do hedge trimming as well as lawn mowing?
Yes. Hedge trimming and shaping can be added to a regular maintenance visit or booked on its own. We handle boundary hedges, feature hedges, box hedges and general shrub tidying across all Auckland suburbs.
Do you do garden maintenance as well as mowing?
Yes — weeding, pruning, garden bed tidying and green waste removal. Garden work can run alongside your regular mowing visits or be booked as a one-off tidy-up.
Can you handle an overgrown or neglected property?
Yes, regularly — from sections left a season to properties that need several visits. Overgrown jobs are assessed and quoted on site before work starts.
For grass over about 50cm, the first visit is usually a rough cut and the second, a week later, brings it to a clean finish at the right height. Staging it protects the root system and gives a far better lawn afterwards than scalping it in one go.

My suburb isn't on your list — can you still help?
Quite possibly. The listed suburbs are our regular routes, not the limit of where we will go. Send us your suburb and property details and we will confirm straight away. We aim to service any enquiry inside the greater Auckland region.
Landlords & rental properties
Do you service rental properties for landlords?
Yes — rental property mowing is one of our most common jobs. We handle regular scheduled mowing through a tenancy, one-off mows before new tenants move in, and between-tenancy tidy-ups.
Landlords need a contractor who turns up, does the same job every time and communicates. That is the whole offer.
Who is responsible for mowing lawns — the tenant or the landlord?
Under the Residential Tenancies Act, tenants are generally responsible for keeping the property reasonably tidy, which includes basic lawn mowing and weeding. More specialised work — hedge trimming, tree pruning, weed spraying — usually sits with the landlord unless the tenancy agreement says otherwise.
Many landlords choose to take mowing off the tenant entirely, either building it into the rent or running a separate service plan, so the property is maintained to a consistent standard regardless of who is living there.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check your tenancy agreement or Tenancy Services for your specific situation.
Can you mow lawns between tenancies for changeovers?
Yes. Between-tenancy tidy-ups are routine for us — mow, edge, trim hedges and a general garden tidy so the property shows well for viewings or move-in day.
Send the address and the date you need it done and we will confirm availability and price based on the lawn's current condition.
Can you manage mowing for multiple rental properties?
Yes. We work with landlords and property managers running several Auckland properties, with one schedule across the portfolio and consolidated invoicing — rather than a separate arrangement per address.
Can you mow the lawn before a property inspection?
Yes. We do one-off visits timed for inspections, open homes and end-of-tenancy assessments. Book at least a week ahead to secure your preferred date, particularly over summer when the schedule is tight.
Lawn care tips
What grass types are common in Auckland, and does it change the mowing?
The four common Auckland grass types are kikuyu, couch, ryegrass blends and fescue. The warm, humid climate suits fast-growing warm-season grasses particularly well.
Kikuyu is vigorous and spreads aggressively — it copes with dry summers but grows hard in spring and needs regular cutting to stay controlled. Couch is fine-leafed and common near the coast. Ryegrass and fescue blends stay greener through winter but struggle in a dry Auckland summer without watering.
Cutting height and technique change with the grass type, which is why the same setting does not suit every lawn.
How short should I cut my lawn in Auckland?
Never remove more than a third of the blade length in one mow. This is the one-third rule. Cutting shorter than that — scalping — weakens the roots, dries the soil out faster and lets weeds in.
Should I water my lawn before or after mowing?
Mow first, then water. Cutting wet grass gives an uneven finish, clumps clippings, blocks the mower and helps disease spread across the lawn.
Watering after a cut helps the lawn recover, especially in summer when fresh growth is exposed to heat. Water early — before 9am — so the lawn dries through the day rather than sitting damp overnight.
Why does my lawn look yellow or patchy after mowing?
Yellowing after a mow is almost always scalping, blunt blades, or drought stress. Scalping exposes the pale lower stem. Blunt blades tear rather than cut, so the tips brown off within a day. Dry lawns simply cannot recover fast from a cut.
Sharp blades and the right cutting height fix it. If your lawn yellows every time, raising the height 10 to 15mm usually makes a visible difference within two cuts.
Can regular mowing help control weeds?
Yes. Consistent mowing at the right height is one of the most effective weed controls there is — a dense lawn shades the soil, so weed seeds struggle to germinate.
Clover, oxalis and stray kikuyu are the usual offenders in Auckland lawns, and all of them get their opening when grass is left long between cuts. A steady fortnightly round through the growing season reduces weed pressure noticeably over a season or two.
When is the best time to start a new lawn care routine?
Spring — September to October — is the best time to start a lawn care routine in Auckland. Soil is warming, grass is coming out of its winter slowdown, and spring rain provides the moisture for strong growth.
Starting then means the lawn enters peak summer growth already at a manageable height, which avoids the overgrown surcharge entirely.
